How We Review Software

Every review published on Software Chronicle goes through the same rigorous process. We do not write reviews based on press releases, vendor-supplied information, or paid placements. Here is exactly how we evaluate every tool.

Step 1 — We Sign Up and Test the Tool

Before writing a single word, our reviewer signs up for the tool using their own account — either a free trial or a paid subscription. We use the tool for a minimum of 7 days in real work scenarios. For more complex tools (enterprise CRMs, payroll software), testing extends to 14–30 days.

During testing, we specifically evaluate:

  • Onboarding experience — how easy is it to get started?
  • Core features — do they work as advertised?
  • User interface — is it intuitive for a non-technical user?
  • Performance — is the tool fast and reliable?
  • Customer support — how does the support team respond to questions?
  • Integration — how well does it connect with other common business tools?

Step 2 — Our 5-Criteria Scoring System

Every tool is scored on 5 criteria, each out of 10, averaged to produce a final score:

CriterionWhat We Evaluate
Ease of Use        /10How intuitive and user-friendly is the interface? Can a non-technical user get started without extensive training?
Features vs Price  /10Does the tool deliver real value relative to its cost? How does it compare to competitors at the same price point?
Customer Support   /10How responsive and helpful is the support team? Are documentation, live chat, and help resources adequate?
Integrations       /10How well does the tool connect with other software? Does it support the integrations most businesses need?
Scalability        /10Can the tool grow with your business? Are enterprise or advanced plans worth the upgrade cost?

The five scores are averaged to produce a final rating out of 10. A score of 9.0 or above indicates an exceptional tool. A score below 7.0 indicates significant limitations. We publish every score transparently, including the criteria scores that produced the final rating.

Step 3 — We Write Without Influence

Our reviewer writes the review independently, based entirely on their testing experience. The review is then fact-checked by a second team member who has not conducted the testing, to ensure accuracy and catch any errors. No software vendor sees a review before it is published.

Step 4 — Affiliate Relationships Are Disclosed, Not Hidden

After writing is complete, we check whether an affiliate relationship exists for the reviewed tool. If it does, an affiliate disclosure is added to the top of the article.

Importantly: this check happens AFTER writing — not before — so the existence of an affiliate relationship has no influence on the review content, score, or conclusion.

Step 5 — Regular Updates

SaaS tools change constantly — new features launch, pricing changes, and companies get acquired. Every review on Software Chronicle is reviewed at least once every 6 months.

When we update a review, we re-test the core functionality and update any pricing or feature information that has changed. The “Last Updated” date on every review reflects the most recent review date.

What We Never Do

  • Accept payment to write positive reviews or change ratings
  • Allow software vendors to review or edit our content before publication
  • Write reviews of tools we have not personally tested
  • Use information provided by vendors as our primary source without independent verification

Remove negative findings from reviews because of affiliate relationships
